Italian suspended after failed drugs test.

Italian driver Luca Moro has been suspended for two years after failing a routing doping test carried out by the FIA.

The 33-year-old, who shared the #52 Renauer Motorsport Porsche 996 GT3 RSR with Wolfgang Kaufmann, was suspended after two samples collected at the Spa 24 Hours on 27 July 2006 tested positive for Benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine.

After a stewards hearing, the decision was taken to impose a two-year ban running from 31 August 2006.

“Luca Moro, a driver in the 2006 FIA GT Championship, has been suspended after testing positive in a routine doping test carried out by the FIA,” a statement issued by motorsports governing body read. “The decision was made by the Stewards of the 2006 Proximus 24 Hours of Spa event on the basis of an adverse analytical finding of Benzoylecgonine (metabolite of Cocaine) in the urine sample B, which confirms the result of sample A, both collected from Mr Moro at the Spa event on July 27, 2006.

“Following a Stewards hearing it has been decided to impose on Mr Moro a two-year suspension of licence with application from August 31, 2006. Cocaine is included in the 2006 list of prohibited substances published by the World Anti-Doping Authority (WADA).

“Mr Moro has been reminded of his right of appeal.”

Moro had claimed a best finish of seventh in the GT2 class at both Silverstone and Paul Ricard.
